That aroma is part of the traditional process used to create the beautiful golden-brown color of ata weaving. It comes naturally from curing the finished bag over coconut-husk fire—a technique that has long been used by artisans in Bali.
Where Does the Toasty Aroma Come From?
Shiva Urban handbags are handwoven from ata, a strong natural vine traditionally used for basketry in East Bali.
After the weaving is complete, the finished piece is dried and then slowly smoked over coconut husks fire. This traditional curing process deepens the natural color of the ata, giving it the warm, rich tones that make Bali woven bags so recognizable.
The process is known locally as “ngunun” and has been documented as part of traditional ata craftsmanship in Karangasem, Bali.
The result is more than just beautiful color. The natural fibers also absorb some of the warm, smoky aroma from the curing process.

An Aroma That Tells a Story

Yes. The toasty aroma naturally becomes softer with time.
It may be more noticeable when your bag is new, especially after it has been stored or packaged for shipping. With regular use and exposure to fresh air, the aroma gradually fades. Depending on the bag, a subtle trace may remain for a few weeks or even several months.

Place the bag in a well-ventilated area.
You can air it outdoors in the shade, but avoid leaving it in strong direct sunlight for long periods.
Leave the bag open so air can circulate through the interior.
Avoid perfumes, fabric sprays, or harsh cleaners on the natural fibers.
